Job Opportunity: Hydrogeologist, Texas, USA

(The following job description does not mention karst, but the job focuses on the Barton Springs Segment of the Edwards Aquifer, an important karst aquifer.)

The Barton Springs/Edwards Aquifer Conservation District (BSEACD) is seeking a Staff Hydrogeologist to support the District’s Aquifer Science Team by conducting hydrogeologic investigations involving the Edwards, Trinity, and other aquifers. This team consists of three aquifer scientists whose mission is to support the development of policy and regulations related to the aquifers within the BSEACD. In this role the individual must be able to demonstrate hydrogeologic expertise in developing and implementing investigations to address groundwater resource development issues and to support critical regulatory and planning efforts. In this role you will assist with making decisions regarding project approach and methodology and will also be responsible for supervising and conducting the studies (including budgeting), then preparing reports that explain the results and how the studies relate to policy and regulatory issues. The Staff Hydrogeologist will coordinate with outside agencies, institutions, and consultants on various studies and issues that are of interest to BSEACD. Karst 2020 – Online and Open Access!

On August 18-20, 2020, a consortium of partners including the George Wright Society, the UNESCO Mammoth Cave Biosphere Region, and Western Kentucky University (WKU) held an international meeting,  Conservation of Fragile Karst Resources: A Workshop on Sustainability and Community in support of UNESCO science programs. Originally planned as an in-person gathering at Kentucky’s Mammoth Cave National Park, with onset of the pandemic the meeting was switched to virtual mode and yet still was a great success, with 90 people attending from 18 countries. Virtual field trips, technical sessions, and workshops were held focusing on how to care for cave and karst resources in way that recognizes the need for sustainable development in a world where people make up an critical component of the ecosystem. Visit our website www.karst2020.com, which is now open access, to view the proceedings, recordings of all plenary and technical session presentations, virtual ‘field trips’, poster gallery, supplemental materials, as well as workshop outcomes.  For ongoing updates and information sharing, you can also follow us on our Karst 2020 YouTube channel and our Facebook page, Conservation of Fragile Karst Resources.

Announcing: Columbia Caving Lecture Series

Greetings to the entire speleological community.

We invite you to follow this series of talks organized by The Group of Speleology and Karstology of the National University and Speleocol, where we will talk with several cavers about their life in caves. They will show us several photos of caverns they explored and they will tell us many stories.

The first guest is Daniel Macedo. Venezuelan speleologist who will tell us about his life, how he learned about caving and his work in this sport.

Connect to the chat on YouTube live and ask your questions in the chat. Daniel will be answering them.

Date: Friday, October 16 at 6:00 p.m. Colombian time.

Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_Ow__8BWxg

The talk will be saved on YouTube so that you can access it at any time.

We also invite you to subscribe to the Speleological Calendar by clicking here, so that you can find out about the following talks, the speleological events that are being programmed and, of course, we invite you to schedule there, the talks that you organize related to Speleology in Latin America and the Caribbean.

16th Sinkhole Conference: Cancelled

In March, the Organizing Committee of the 16th Multidisciplinary Conference on Sinkholes and the Engineering and Environmental Impacts of Karst (“The Sinkhole Conference”) studied carefully the situation with the growing pandemic and our legal and financial obligations with the conference. We made the difficult decision to postpone the conference by one year and then we completed and digitally published the conference proceedings as promised on the original schedule and made them available for download. If you have not downloaded them, visit www.sinkholeconference.com where they are available for free.

We appreciate everyone’s support and understanding of these unprecedented circumstances. As they are continuing, we have now cancelled the physical meeting of the 16th Sinkhole Conference. We will not meet next year in Puerto Rico during the postponed dates we announced in March. Also, we will not publish a second edition to the proceedings for the 2021 meeting date since it is now cancelled. We are all disappointed by this necessary cancelation.

We have contacted all registrants to refund their fees. If you registered but did not get a direct message about the cancelation, we apologize. Please contact me directly at gveni@nckri.org about your refund.

At this time, we do not know when or where the next Sinkhole Conference occur. We will wait until there is general certainty that the pandemic will be over in a reliably predictable timeframe before we begin planning. We will certainly post the announcement on this list when our plans for the 17th conference are confirmed.

Again, we thank you for your patience, understanding, and support.

On behalf of the Organizing Committee,

George Veni, PhD

NCKRI Executive Director

16th Sinkhole Conference Co-chair
